What Is Brushed Jersey Fabric?
As a textile engineer, I’ve worked closely with knit fabrics in manufacturing, and brushed jersey fabric stands out for its comfort and versatility. It is a knit textile that has been mechanically brushed to raise the fibers on one or both sides. This brushing gives the fabric a soft, fuzzy texture, making it ideal for clothing that sits close to the skin.
The base material is jersey knit, which means it is made using a weft knitting technique that gives the fabric its natural stretch and drape. Brushed jersey can be made from cotton, polyester, rayon, spandex, or blends of these fibers.
How Brushed Jersey Fabric Is Made

Knitting the Base Fabric
Brushed jersey starts as standard jersey knit. The knitting process involves interlocking loops of yarn using circular knitting machines. This method gives the fabric flexibility and breathability.
Brushing Process
Once the fabric is knitted, it is passed through wire rollers or brushes. These tools lift the tiny surface fibers, making the material soft and slightly fluffy. The brushing can be done on one side or both sides, depending on the desired finish. This step also improves insulation and comfort.
Properties of Brushed Jersey Fabric
Soft Texture
Brushing creates a velvet-like surface, making the fabric feel warm and smooth. This is why it’s used for items that need to feel gentle against the skin, such as pajamas and baby clothes.
Good Stretch
The knit structure gives brushed jersey excellent stretch and recovery. If the fabric contains spandex, it will have 4-way stretch, making it suitable for activewear.
Lightweight Yet Warm
Although it’s not bulky, brushed jersey traps air between the raised fibers. This increases thermal insulation while keeping the fabric breathable.
Durable and Easy to Work With
Despite its softness, brushed jersey is durable and doesn’t pill easily when properly finished. It’s also easy to sew, which makes it popular for home sewing projects.
Types of Brushed Jersey Fabric

Single Brushed Jersey
This fabric is brushed on one side only—usually the inside. It is lightweight and soft, making it ideal for sleepwear, T-shirts, and casual tops. The outer surface remains smooth for a clean finish.
Double Brushed Poly (DBP)
Double brushed poly is brushed on both sides and made from polyester blended with spandex. This type is extremely soft, stretchy, and often used for leggings, dresses, and fitted tops. It drapes well and resists wrinkles.
Uses of Brushed Jersey Fabric
Clothing
Brushed jersey fabric is commonly used in clothing that requires softness and flexibility. Some typical items include:
- T-shirts: Lightweight and breathable
- Leggings: Stretchy and form-fitting
- Loungewear: Comfortable for all-day wear
- Children’s Clothing: Gentle on sensitive skin
Home Textiles
This fabric is also used for home items that need a cozy touch:
- Sheets and Pillowcases: Especially in cooler months
- Blankets and Throws: Warm but not heavy
How to Care for Brushed Jersey Fabric

Washing
Brushed jersey should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. This prevents the fibers from wearing down. Use mild detergent to preserve the texture and color.
Drying
Air drying is preferred to maintain softness and reduce shrinkage. If using a dryer, choose a low-heat setting.
Ironing
Generally, ironing is not necessary. If you need to remove wrinkles, use a low-heat iron and place a cloth between the fabric and iron to protect the fibers.
Summary
Brushed jersey fabric is a soft, stretchable knit with raised fibers that improve comfort and warmth. It’s made by brushing the surface of standard jersey knit fabric. This material is available as single brushed or double brushed poly, depending on how many sides are brushed and the fiber content. Popular for leggings, pajamas, tops, and blankets, brushed jersey offers flexibility and softness that suits both fashion and home use.
